To understand the optical transceiver, we need to understand the basic concepts of fiber optic transceiver, Fiberall hereby list them as below for reference:
Transmission distance: the maximum distance of the optical signals can be transmitted. Because the fiber itself has side effects such as dispersion, attenuation of optical signal, so different types of light source can be transmitted in different distance.
Interface rate: maximum electrical signal rate (error free transmission) which the optical devices can carry, the standard Ethernet interface rates are: 125Mbit/s, 1.25Gbit/s, 10.3125Gbit/s, 41.25Gbit/s etc..
Central wavelength: in the emission spectrum, when connecting 50 percent maximum amplitude values, the corresponding wavelength of the midpoint of the line segment is central wavelength.
Fiber mode: according to the fiber core diameter and characteristics, fiber mode can be divided into multimode and single mode, generally fiber core diameter of multimode is bigger and mode dispersion is serious, so the transmission distance is short; dispersion of single-mode fiber is small, so the transmission distance is longer.
Mode bandwidth: the mode bandwidth is the bandwidth after the maximum peak of the central wavelength of the main mode falls to a certain dB.
Fiber diameter: fiber core diameter, international standard, generally multimode 62.5um and 50um; single mode 9um.
Fiber grade: lights with different wavelengths have their best work window in different optical fiber, in order to get best wavelength or dispersion and change the refractive index distribution, fiber is divided into multimode optical fiber (G.651) and single-mode fiber (G.652), dispersion shifted fiber (G.653), non-zero dispersion shift optical fiber (G.655) and so on.
Connector type: interface type of optical transceiver (port which fiber is inserted), like LC (SFP, SFP+, XFP), SC, MPO (part of the QSFP+, CXP etc.).
Transmission power: the output optical power of the fiber optic transceiver under normal working condition.
Maximum receiving sensitivity: the minimum input average optical power received by the receiving component at a certain rate of error rate BER (bit error rate) =10-12.
Overload optical power: the maximum input average optical power received by the receiving component at a certain rate of error rate BER (bit error rate) =10-12.
Extinction ratio: minimum ratios value of signal average power and space average optical power under modulation condition.
