To describe different bandwidth allocation policies of OLT, we need to know DBA. What is DBA? DBA ( Dynamically Bandwidth Assignment ) is a kind of policy which can finish dynamic allocation of the uplink bandwidth in a time interval of microseconds or milliseconds.
Why PON need DBA? Because DBA can improve the uplink bandwidth utilization and add more users to the PON port. Users can also enjoy higher bandwidth services, especially the service need larger bandwidth mutation.
So OLT how to realize dynamic bandwidth allocation via DBA? There are four basic types of T-CONT: Fix, Assure, Not Assure and Best Effort (Max). They are used to represent different bandwidth allocation policies. What is the difference between them? The difference is done by DBA.
The bandwidth of Fix is fixed, that is to say, it is assigned to a certain T-CONT. Though there is no data for this TCONT, the allocated time still be kept for the certain T-CONT. It is very important, because it can ensure that the data can be delivered correctly when it needs to be sent, especially when there is very important information.
The bandwidth of Assure is to ensure the bandwidth. Means that data in this T-CONT can be always sent up, no matter when there is data to be sent, if the data is within the corresponding bandwidth, OLT will always satisfy it. But if the T-CONT does not have too much data to be sent, then this part of bandwidth can be used for other T-CONT need more bandwidth. In fact, T-CONT for the Not Assure and Best Effort are similar, they can not sure the T-CONT will have much bandwidth, it still depends on the bandwidth using of OLT, if there is surplus bandwidth, OLT will consider to allocate the remaining bandwidth to them, the only difference is Not Assure is prior to Best Effort, it is to say, if there is residual bandwidth, Not Assure will be satisfied first and if there is still surplus bandwidth, it will allocate to Best Effort.
